Why Medicine Bowl?
Biology is a vast and diverse discipline. As biology educators, we believe middle school students benefit from a broad education in biology, covering evolution, ecology, plants and animals, other organisms, the history of Earth, and taxonomy.
However, as physicians and biomedical researchers, we also believe that high school students should focus more deeply on the areas of biology most relevant to their own health and lifespan and to the future of humanity. This is why we created the National Medicine Bowl for high school students.
The National Medicine Bowl features four categories: Cell Biology, Genetics, Human Physiology, and Human Disease. The first three categories will contain questions that are generally more advanced than those in the Biology Bowl, while the new category, Human Disease, will focus on the most common diseases that a well-educated biology and science student should know about.
To prepare for the National Medicine Bowl, we recommend studying the following textbooks:
Campbell Biology
Essential Cell Biology
A college-level Genetics textbook
A college-level Human Physiology textbook
The first annual National Medicine Bowl will take place on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
